Thankfully, the overall story is strong, if convoluted slightly by the various time jumps, but they do help deliver the biggest narrative payoffs. You'll spend long stretches in silence, which can make the constant hunting for essential crafting items seem hollow and repetitive. ![]() Sadly, Ellie has grown quite gruff and serious, much like Joel, and her conversations with other characters don't punctuate the horror with quirky levity as the original did. Some of the greatest moments from the first game were the witty back-and-forth between Ellie and Joel, from that cheesy joke book to interesting perspectives on being a teenager in a post-apocalyptic world – like why would you not eat food if you have it!? But there's also significant stretches of the game where Ellie is alone. This time, we meet Dina, Ellie's love interest who you'll remember her kissing in the E3 trailer, plus Jesse, Dina's ex-boyfriend who also lives in Jackson.
